چکیده

Work by Kilby, Slaney, Thiebaux andWalsh [1] showed that the backdoors and backbones of unstructured Random 3SAT instances are largely disjoint. In this work we extend this study to the consideration of backdoors in SAT encodings of structured problems. We show that the results of Kilby et al. also apply to structured problems. Further, we analyse the frequency with which individual variables appear in backdoors for specific problem instances. In all problem classes there are variables with particularly high frequencies of backdoor membership. Backbone variables that do appear in backdoors typically appear in very few. It has previously been hypothesised that modern SAT solvers implicitly exploit small backdoors [2], for example, through the use of restart policies. Modern SAT solvers use clause learning, and we show how clause learning interacts with the backdoor structure of problems to enhance the opportunities for SAT solvers to exploit small backdoors in this way. We show that clause learning reduces the size of backdoors in the augmented problem, whilst simultaneously reducing the number of variables that appear in backdoors.

Backbones and Backdoors in Satisfiability

We study the backbone and the backdoors of propositional satisfiability problems. We make a number of theoretical, algorithmic and experimental contributions. From a theoretical perspective, we prove that backbones are hard even to approximate. From an algorithmic perspective, we present a number of different procedures for computing backdoors. From an empirical perspective, we study the correl...

Relating Complexity-theoretic Parameters with SAT Solver Performance

Over the years complexity theorists have proposed many structural parameters to explain the surprising efficiency of conflictdriven clause-learning (CDCL) SAT solvers on a wide variety of large industrial Boolean instances. While some of these parameters have been studied empirically, until now there has not been a unified comparative study of their explanatory power on a comprehensive benchmar...

Backdoors to Tractable Answer-Set Programming

We present a unifying approach to the efficient evaluation of propositional answer-set programs. Our approach is based on backdoors which are small sets of atoms that represent “clever reasoning shortcuts” through the search space. The concept of backdoors is widely used in the areas of propositional satisfiability and constraint satisfaction. We show how this concept can be adapted to the nonm...

Backdoor Treewidth for SAT

A strong backdoor in a CNF formula is a set of variables such that each possible instantiation of these variables moves the formula into a tractable class. The algorithmic problem of finding a strong backdoor has been the subject of intensive study, mostly within the parameterized complexity framework. Results to date focused primarily on backdoors of small size. In this paper we propose a new ...

Variable-Deletion Backdoors to Planning

Backdoors are a powerful tool to obtain efficient algorithms for hard problems. Recently, two new notions of backdoors to planning were introduced. However, for one of the new notions (i.e., variable-deletion) only hardness results are known so far. In this work we improve the situation by defining a new type of variabledeletion backdoors based on the extended causal graph of a planning instanc...
